Abstract

The defeat of Aljubarrota suffered by the king of Castile John I on August 14, 1385 had very important consequences that produced an institutional crisis for the Castilian monarchy. Among the many direct effects of this defeat, we can find several speeches pronounced by King John I between 1385 and 1390 in contexts of exceptional solemnity. Two of these speeches were pronounced during two sessions of the Cortes and the other during a session of the Royal Council. These speeches presented ideological arguments and political projects of an exceptional ideological and institutional importance for the history and the political culture of the Castilian monarchy
