Abstract

Perceived social support is a determinant of well-being in old age and few scales evaluate the social support received and the reciprocity in this exchange. This study examines the psychometric properties of the Perceived Social Support Questionnaire (PSSQ) for a multi-ethnic sample of 800 Chilean older adults. In addition, construct validity and emergent validity are analysed through the APGAR-Family scale of Smilkstein. The confirmatory factor analysis corroborates that CASP has three factors: emotional support, advice and instrumental support. Regarding internal consistency and reliability, the results indicate adequate values in the three family sources analysed (spouse or partner, sons and daughters and other family members). The convergent validity made it possible to demonstrate the relationship between CASP and family functionality (APGAR-family). The results confirm the cross-cultural validity of CASP, including indigenous ethnic minorities. The results and, specifically, the differences observed according to ethnicity are discussed
