Abstract

The present article collects the inaugural lecture of the XI Theological Conference, organized by the ISTIC, at Gran Canaria. The author tries to answer the questions: “Should religion mix with politics (or with economics)? Does it know how to do that correctly? Is that its sphere of competence?”. After an analysis of the principle features of nowadays spanish economy, not marked by one economic crisis, but –in the author’s opinion- by a superposition of various of them, he centers his attention on poverty to indicate how the mentioned crisis does not affect everyone in the same way –as one tends to say– but has mainly affected the most vulnerable, increasing the already existing inequalities. This social economic context, which has given rise to emerging new social movements and political parties, makes the actual political situation, including its oportunities and risks, fascinating and, at the same time, uncertain. Here is where the believer is called to live his or her baptismal commitment exercising political charity.
