Abstract
Since the 19th century, museums are key pieces in the transmission of ideas and concepts. Most of them being public, museums have an increased responsibility for the formation of successive generations of citizens, confirming and perpetuating conceptions on many subjects, including the role of women in society. Analyzing the presence and representation of women in the National Museums of Archeology in Portugal and Spain, we verify that there is a long way to go until gender parity is achieved. The causes of the specificities and differences identified for the two cases are discussed and the hypothesis of a future investigation in the area are pointed out for a better comparative apprehension of the realities observed.
