Resumen

The modern economy is based on two pillars: information and knowledge, which help in creating value and intellectual capital. Several studies are found about intellectual capital, hardly any are there on the more basic and traditional high manpower and low technology industries like timber and related industries. This dissertation studies the timber and related industries of two regions of the Iberian Peninsula (Portugal and Galicia (Spain)), which is composed mainly of SMEs, to understand if intellectual capital or any one of its main three components: human capital, structural capital and relational capital adds value. Based on publicly available data from 2002 to 2018, the industry was divided into three main sectors: extraction, conversion and finished products. Using a new method, each component separately calculated as a percentage of the total assets, where the sum of all three gives the value of the intellectual capital for each year for each company.
