Abstract
The present work proposes a review and study of the foundation and endowment of the Cistercian monastery of Montesión, within the framework of both the «reforming patronage» of the Trastámara dynasty and the early diffusion of the observant movement throughout Castile, as well as the artistic and religious patronage of the Álvarez de Toledo family. The architectural and sculptural remains of the primitive monastery will be analysed, among which we may highlight the fragments recovered from the tombs of the founders, currently deposited in the parish church of Polán (Toledo), as well as other pieces preserved in the National Archaeological Museum and the Santa Cruz Museum in Toledo.
