Abstract

This paper presents the origin of the issue of empathy in the History of Ideas and its importance in economics, as well as its revitalization (paragraphs I and II). It also attempts to undo some philosophical misunderstandings that are the basis of this (paragraph III). It concludes that it is not the study of empathy, so fashionable today, but the study of decision making the place where Economics can find the nature of emotions in relation to human behavior. This nature is its power to inhibit behavior. The study of repentance is itself more interesting and helpful for the economy than the study of empathy (paragraph IV). Finally (section V), the institutional approach (in a broad sense: economic, political and social) is presented as the best in order to understand the issues related to economic human behavior.
