In the late nineteenth century, the Cantabrian population from Comillas experienced a vertiginous transformation in the hands of a catalan artisans group, who brought the emerging artistic trend of Renaissance to the Cantabric. They had been called by the López family, ennobled by Alfons XII with an immense fortune made in Cuba and developed afterwards in Barcelona. In this context, the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner had been commissioned by the second marquis of Comillas and an illustrious Comillian family to design two works of a funeral construction: the refurbishment of the local cemetery and the construction of the Piélago pantheon
