Abstract

The fabric of the network of networks is formed by a complex signic mesh that forwards, in a potentially unlimited course, a sign to another sign. An operation that brings to mind the description of semiosis, as the action of the signs, of the American philosopher Charles S. Peirce. Even from the very theoretical beginning of the concept of hypertext it is already possible to find peircean echoes that will help to understand a phenomenon as current as the Web and, especially, its original hypertextual language. A language that has generated big discussions and will be interpreted here as a possible metaphor of the signic Web process. In fact, the hypertext will be, in this respect, a kind of crosslinking encyclopedia, in which innumerable jumps incalculable “signic games” exist enabled by the hypertext as text in action. Thus, an interpretive approximation will be developed trying to understand the signic reality of the Web in the light of "unlimited semiosis", using fundamentally the concept of semiosis, of "interpretante" and Umberto Eco's hermeneutics, in regards to his Peirce's reading, as well as the concept of hypertext, restricted to its global form on the Web, seen as a totality, from its more remote origins up to its more current version, to be able to examine, then, the behavior and the life of the signs in the hypertextual environment.
