Resum

Background: Our goal was to assess the experience of Spanish pediatricians training overseas. Secondly, we compared the assessment from pediatricians training in low-income versus high-income countries. Material and methods: A nationwide multicenter cross-sectional survey was conducted from January to March 2014. Members from SEIP (Spanish Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases) were included. Countries of destination were divided in two groups: low and lower middle-income (LLMI), and high and upper middle-income (HUMI) countries, according to the 2013 World Bank income classification by GNI per capita. The experience of trainees in LLMI vs HUMI countries were compared. Results: Forty-seven trainees (61%) were interested in infectious diseases training. All pediatricians were satisfied during training. Twenty-five trainees (35%) were in LLMI countries. There were no significant differences between the assessment from pediatricians training in LLMI vs HUMI countries. Twelve residents (17%) developed their training within a cooperation and development aid, most of them in LLMI countries (44%). Conclusions: Training overseas is fully valued by pediatricians. Pediatric training in low-income countries may be also training in global health.
