This study was aimed to systematically review the most recent scientific literature on the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in child and adolescent victims of terrorist attacks. A search of the studies published between 2014 and 2019 was carried out in PsycINFO, MEDLINE and PTSDpubs. This search identified 10 studies in which, altogether, 10,901 children or adolescents who were direct or indirect victims of terrorist attacks had been evaluated. The results obtained allow one to estimate that the average prevalence rate of PTSD in child and adolescent victims of terrorist attacks is almost 13%. This rate is higher, of 59%, in direct victims. The results of this review also suggest that the prevalence of PTSD is lower in younger children (1-7 years) and that, instead, it is higher when terrorist attacks occur in countries severely hit by terrorism, such as some countries of South Asia or the Middle East. These results are discussed in the context of research on the prevalence of PTSD in adult victims of terrorism and their implications for professional practice in the clinical, legal, and forensic fields.
