Abstract

The rise of social networking has become the benchmark for Internet communication. Young people are not immune to this reality and they have made the use of social networking one of their favorite hobbies, contributing to its spread exponentially. The analysis of social networks shows that there are teenagers, even if they are a minority, expressing their literary preferences in social networks. Therefore, in this paper, we describe the results of a study about the reading allusions in the speech of Spanish young people which use the social network Twitter. We pretend to define their view of reading, their literary preferences and the role they play in the formation of adolescent identity. Five hundred and fifty profiles created by users aged between twelve and eighteen are analyzed. The methodology used is Discourse Analysis and we analyze a data corpus composed of productions written by teenage users of the social network Twitter in six months. The analysis shows that the majority of young people refers only to juvenile best-sellers. From an educational point of view, it is necessary to know the preferences of young readers and their vision of literature to suggest possible reading itineraries in order to encourage teenagers to read other books
