Résumé

The reception of Poe’s work in mid-nineteenth century Europe was especially warm from authors like Baudelaire and Mallarmé. In 1847, Baudelaire discovered Poe, profoundly identified with him, and began translating several of his texts. Mallarmé, on the other hand, learned English to better read and translate the part of the American author’s work that Baudelaire had not translated, and kept him always as his reference. Both were attracted by Poe’s intellectual virtuosity, his contrasting clarity of logic and sinister mystery, and his journey away from romanticism and into modernism. Much has been written about Poe’s influence on these French poets, and the relevant role they played in the reception of the work and ideas of the Bostonian, and this essay revisits the subject to illuminate interesting details and to make new precisions, in particular the fact that Poe’s works and ideas are commented and enrichened by Baudelaire and Mallarmé’s points of view, and all this forms a textual body of unusual relevance, in which there is a permanent discussion and analysis on the nature of poetry, on the essence of the elements of poetry, on the difficulties of translation, and on the modern concept of the poetic work
