Resumen

One of teachers’ primary objectives in the Social Sciences classroom is to promote social thinking and help pupils understand historical time from the analysis of sources. As primary sources, documents are an excellent starting point to formulate hypotheses about the construction of historical knowledge and the different social variables and to understand the concept of multicausality. The analysis of primary sources also contributes to reinforcing pupils’ linguistic and social competences, which are essential in the learning process. Through a paleography workshop that analyses a primary source —in this case a tax roll, which offers considerable potential as a tool for teaching and learning— pupils can build knowledge about the daily life of historical societies and teachers can gauge pupils’ acquisition and use of linguistic, social and civic competences in the last two years of primary education.
