Zusammenfassung

This paper shows the mineralogy of Holocene deposits of the Almenara Marsh, on the Castellón-Valencia coasts. The changes in the mineral associations and their relation with sedimentation environments allow a detailed knowledge of the sedimentation controls. The study was performed in 41 samples from three long well cores being grouped in six sedimentary facies. The relationship between mineralogy and facies shows that the input of phyllosilicates (illite, mainly) to the wetland comes from inland areas where alluvial deposits (sheet-flood) predominate, while quartz comes from coastal marine deposits (washover-fan). Lacustrine facies form a facies belt that ranges from shallower clays and peats facies, to deeper carbonate mud and charophytes. The mineralogy of these facies shows up: clays facies undergo post-depositional processes linked to flooding and drying periods; and the peats facies, located on the subtidal zone, capture the supply of terrigenous (quartz and phyllosilicates) towards the center of the wetland where carbonate mud and charophytes facies, composed mainly of calcite, are located.
