Résumé

The finding in the General Archive of the Complutense University of a document of 1831 sent to the Royal Veterinary School of Madrid by J. Padilla, veterinarian practicing in the locality of San Sebastián de los Reyes, has allowed us to illustrate the use of acupuncture in equids in that period. The document of nine sheets is called Veterinary Observation and presents the case of a mule with a locomotor disorder, denominated by the author as “paraplexy”. The follow-up of the case from December 18, 1831 to February 1, 1832, describes the sequence of sessions, the type of needles, depth of insertion, time of application, observed reactions and final evolution of the case until its total cure. The communication describes and analyzes the veterinary sources of the time referring technique of acupuncture including those cited by the author in the document
