Resumo
In this work a textural characterization of the Salinas breccia is performed. This breccia overlies the gabbros forming Los Molinos intrusion, which is located in the central western part of the Fuerteventura Island. The Salinas breccia is formed by fragments of different composition, though they are mainly basaltic volcanic fragments, with very different size (from ash size to bomb/block size), and shapes, ranging from surrounded to subangular. All these fragments are embedded in a sandy reddish groundmass, in the lower parts of the breccia, and in a more compact groundmass in the upper parts. Due to differents characteristichs of the breccia, it has been classified as a secondary volcaniclastic deposit, probably of a debris avalanche type. This deposit would be correlated with the Ampuyenta lithic breccias, which outcrop between the lower and upper parts of the Northern Miocene Volcanic Edifice, and were formed due to the partial destruction of the oldest part of this volcanic edifice. Therefore, the Salinas breccia could be due to the same process.
