Abstract

Recently there has been an increase in the request for treatment of psychiatric symptomatology in patients with epilepsy. Psychopathologic disorders in epilepsy may time-related with seizures crises (called perictal and interictal disorders, according to the relationship). The most frequent phenomena presented after a crisis are confusion or brief psychosis. This article describes the case of an epileptic patient who, after recovery of several seizures requiring hospital admission, developed a brief psychosis. The possible presence of etiologic factors which are common in epilepsy and psychosis are discussed, as is the need to take into account both antiepileptic and neuroleptic drugs when treating these patients.
