Abstract

Anesthetics provide hypnosis, analgesia, and muscle relaxation in order to perform procedures, however, these drugs can have adverse effects that increase morbidity and mortality. It is important to obtain a complete history, a physical examination, and clinical pathology data prior to the development of any protocol for sedation, anesthesia, and analgesia in order to identify specific problems that may affect the anesthetic procedure. Furthermore, anesthesia in the foal requires close control of anesthetic parameters because rapid changes requiring urgent interventions are common.
