Abstract
The Geological and Mining Bulletin (Boletín Geológico y Minero, BGM) is the successor of the “Bulletin of the Commission for the Geological Map of Spain” (Boletín de la Comisión del Mapa Geologico de España), first edited in 1874, the BGM being then the senior Spanish geological journal and one of the older scientific journals of the country. During the last decade, efforts to modernize BGM have resulted in the fulfilling of the entire national (ARCE evaluation of FECYT) and international (LATINDEX) quality criteria. As a consequence of this, BGM has become the leader in the geologicaljournal classification systems (e. g., Scimago Journal Rank de Scopus), with an increasing citation impact in the most prestigious databases (Thomson´s SCI). The key reasons for its success are: a dynamic and functional editorial board, a database of more than 300 potential scientific reviewers, a strict pairs review system, a high level of demand in corrections before and after paper acceptance, a careful quality control of page formatting and printing, a wide international distribution system by interexchanges or subscriptions, its electronic internet version, and the availability of its full historical digital content through the internet (www.igme.es/boletin).
