Abstract

En este artículo se analiza, para una muestra de 33 países europeos en el periodo 2000-2016, la relación existente entre los niveles de desigualdad, medidos según el índice de Gini, y el nivel de robotización, evaluado según la densidad de robots por cada 10.000 trabajadores. Utilizando un enfoque de datos de panel, la conclusión es que mayores niveles de automatización llevan a una reducción de la desigualdad a medio plazo. La explicación a este fenómeno puede encontrarse en el hecho de que el aumento de la robotización genera una mayor riqueza en el país, que puede ser utilizada por los gobiernos para reducir la desigualdad a través de políticas redistributivas. Dadas las limitaciones de este trabajo, que no incluye muchos efectos relevantes a fin de explicar la desigualdad, este resultado debe considerarse únicamente como el punto de partida para investigaciones posteriores. No obstante, sí nos da una indicación de que la relación entre desigualdad y nivel de robotización dista de ser obvia.
