Abstract

New Aptian stratigraphic units from the western margin of the Maestrazgo basin are proposed. The Las Parras de Martín sandstone Formation, which contains the Morrita and Galve Members, is secondarily built up of sandy limestones. It was deposited in different kinds of shallow marine sedimentary environments and in paleogeographic terms it represents a western discharge of siliciclastic sediment to the basin. It is an equivalent stratigraphic unit of the Chert, Forcall y Villarroya de los Pinares formations and its age is Upper Barremian - Lower Aptian. The Puerto de Sollavientos marl and limestone member (Benasal Fm.) is dominantly shaly and contain some secondary sandstone layers. It also represents a marginal lithological body of the basin and its origin is dominantly shallow marine. It passes southwards to the Benasal limestone Formation and its age is uppermost Early Aptian and Late Aptian.
