Resumo

Tertiary basins of the Southern Iberian Massif lack coherent chronological allocation given their mutual disconnection and the absence of age data. The Guadiana basin is a complex basin divided in two sub-basins by successive tectonic phases. This work pursues their integration and synthesis within a morphotectonic frame, establishing some criteria of correlation and interpretation between both subbasins within their geological (Iberian) context. Two depositional sequences are defined. They are bound by a regional unconformity and display a distinctive unit between them, characterized by carbonate duricrusts rich in paligorskite. This unit can be used as a reference criterion not only between the two sub-basins but also for others nearby. Nevertheless, it poses some identification problems due to its local convergence with a lacustrine limestone unit located at the top of the Upper Sequence. According to the facies, duricrusts and phyllosilicates, a correlation with other Iberian Massif basins may be established. Bases on it, we attribute the base of the Upper Sequence to an Eocene-Oligocene age. This would mean that the Lower Sequence corresponds to the Lower-Middle Paleogene.
