In 1578, the Diálogo sobre el oficio de sargento mayor of Francisco de Valdés was published in Madrid. Despite being a short work, it enjoyed some success at the time, being printed in 1589, 1590, 1591 and 1596, sometimes as Espejo y disciplina militar, a title with which it has been frequently known and used in the translation into different languages. From the edition of Brussels of 1589, by Roger Velpius, will be printed together with Discurso sobre la forma de reducir la disciplina militar a mejor estado of Sancho de Londoño. Probably, the similarity of ideas of the two works favored the joint impression, since both treat the problem of the discipline in the army, a topical question with a great interest in a moment of continuous wars for the Spanish crown, especially in Flanders, where both authors stood out militarily. This paper attempts to expose the trajectory of textual transmission of this dialogue and analyze succinctly the relationship of the work with other similar texts throughout the sixteenth century, trying to expose a series of hypotheses about the causes of its editorial success.
