Résumé

Aortic valve replacement is the most frequently performed cardiac surgical procedure in Spain. Currently, the most common cause of this valvular heart disease is degenerative aortic stenosis.The only approved medical treatment to stop the progression of aortic stenosis, improve symptoms and prolong life expectancy is aortic valve replacement with a prosthesis. There are two types of prostheses, biological and mechanical, each one with different indications for implantation. Due to an increase in the elderly population over of 65 years, the use of bioprosthesis is becoming more common in order to reduce the hemorrhagic and thrombotic risk associated with the use of mechanical prosthesis.
