Abstract

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most severe and frequent disabling disease in childhood, including motor, cognitive and sensorial sequelae. Studies on CP causes are difficult because of its multifactorial etiology. Anyway, low gestational age and/or birth weight are major determinants pf CP . Extreme preterm (EP) and extreme low birth weight (ELBW) newborns are those under 25 weeks of gestational age and 1000 g of birth weight, respectively. Due to the immaturity of central nervous system (CNS) in those babies, both EP and ELBW have been considered of highest risk to develop CP. An important factor explaining such a high risk is the high incidence of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in those patients.
