Abstract

The discourse that appeared, both in the press and the literature, between the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Puerto Rico, expressed a particular urgency toward the emancipation of women. There were excluded, as in the rest of the world, of most basic rights recognized to men. Women were trapped and hopelessly suffered many injustices to which there were subjected. Through newspapers and magazines dedicated to the “beautiful sex”, the most prominent intellectuals in the Island managed to make the situation of inequality and oppression on Puerto- Rican women at the turn of the 20th century the object of an important discussion.The liberal’s expressions prompted women to produce their own speech. By the hands of these women, “the beautiful sex” publications paved the way for the construction of a modern and independent woman, willing to improve herself, of becoming a citizen committed to the transformation of the country and the reality of times, ready to lead the fight for their rights...
