Nutritive valué (chemical composition and in vitro digestibility) of pasture and extrusa samples, and dry matter intake of two pasture communities (Nardus stricta and Bromus erectus) were studied in a mountainous área. Pasture samples were obtained by cutting all the herbage within quadrants (0.5 x 0.5 m) with shears, and extrusa samples using eight oesophageal fistulated merino wheters. Estimate of dry matter intake was made from the in vitro digestibility of extrusa and from faecal outputs. To determinate total faeces outputs, 12 merino sheep were used fitted with harnesses. Crude protein content and in vitro dry matter digestibility of pasture was higher (P<0.05) in the Nardus stricta community than in the Bromus erectus one. Organic matter, crude protein content (P<0.001) and in vitro dry matter digestibility (P<0.01) of extrusas was higher in the Nardus sricta community than in the Bromus erectus one. Dry matter intake was similar in both communities (P>0.05). Mean valué were 992 g/ewe/day.
