Abstract

This work is a multicenter study to assess the clinical efficacy in controlling periodontitis in the dog, through the use of a toothpaste gel (Xmile Plus©, Urano Vet) that contains egg yolk immunoglobulins (IgY) from chickens that have been immunized against bacteria of the genre Porphyromonas, considered periodontopathogenic microorganisms with a high prevalence in chronic and acute periodontitis. The study was carried out in 47 dogs of different breeds and the data was collected from different veterinary clinics in Spain. Dogs with various degrees of halitosis, plaque and / or dental tartar were included in the study. The toothpaste gel was applied twice a week, and the area and thickness of dental tartar, the degree of halitosis, oral pain, gingival bleeding and gingivitis were objectively measured, at 30, 90 and 120 days. Based on the results obtained, we can report that gels or toothpastes that contain IgY may reduce gingival inflammation and the degree of periodontal disease, appreciating the best results after 120 days.
