Abstract

The essay compares the history of Chile and México in the period from 1988 to 2006 in order to assess if the opening of trade and the de-regulation of the economy have influenced the development of the economies of both countries; to explain the role that the functioning of their institutions has played in the performance of their economies; to draw a distinction between those problems that bear on the short term economic performance and those that are structural and bear on the long term performance; to identify the current political, social and economic challenges both countries have to face in the light of the results of the elections held in 2005 and 2006, respectively. The text is a summary of a wide ranging research project that compiles economic, social and political Information.
