Abstract

After noting the need for strictly developmental perspectives that preserve the contributions of differential psychology, the author reviews these classic developmental approaches to psychosexual development, focusing on the cognitive theory of Kolhberg (1966). The author then analyses both the latter efforts to improve these approaches from a psychoanalitic, behavioural and cognitive point of view as well as the new perspectives appearing at the begining of the 70s: the approach of trascendence of sexual roles and that of information processing, thusly providing the main characteristics that distinguish them from the classics. The author wonders whether it will be convenient to formulate a new theorical elaboration that will take into account the principles, concerns and needs common to all of them, considering that for this purpose a clarification of the taxonomic terminology will be necessary, the contexttualization of contents and the extension through the vital cycle. After developing these three foundation basis , the author closes by sketching a new developmental approach to sex and gender typification, which will make possible a new arrangement and a rethinking of the findings of the subject.
