Abstract

lntroduction: 22q11 deletion syndrome involves oral disorders (enamel hypomineralization, saliva disorders) that may influence the onset of caries. Material and methods: 21 children with the syndrome, aged 5-18 years, were divided into 3 groups: 5-9, 10-14 and 2: 15 years old. Caries and restorative indexes and presence of sealants were determined. The results were compaed with those of the general Spanish population (GSP). Results: The 5-9 year-old group showed caries indexes that were between 3 and 10 times higher than the GSP, and restorative indexes that were 3 times higher. In the other two groups, the indexes studied were lower than those of the GSP. Between 20-66.6% of each group had a fissure sealant. Conclusions: The higher indexes of caries and restorations in the youngest group compared to the GSP may be due to the fact that these children have pathologies that can influence the appearance of caries. The high index of restorations and the presence of preventive measures may lead to a reduction as the age of the patient increases.
