Resum

The latest developments in the etiology and the recovery capacity of the teeth against the aggressions of the dental decay, should make us reflect on the appropriate treatment for this disease, especially in cases of deep caries near the pulp. The dentist must decide whether main tain the vitality of the tooth, or otherwise condemns the tooth to lose it. Our view is that an important percentage of the teeth with root canal treatments, could have remained its vitality if the dentist had made a good chronological diagnosis of the problem. This requires of the exact identification of the affected tissue in each situation and its extension. The application of radiology and lighting identifiers can facilitate discrimination of the affected tissue. On the other hand we think the principles of removing decay stages (TECE) should be applied routinely. In this paper we present an update of the TECE, where we have selected the zinc-oxide eugenol reinforced with polymers (IRM®), as an ideal temporary filling material before the permanent one.
