Resumo

The construction of Library Science presents several terminological and discursive problems that have shaped and transformed several related concepts. The official narrative of the area presents classification as one of the key discursive practices in the emergence of Library Science, while also being relegated by other practices in the construction of other concepts such as Information Science. In this paper we use a combination of Foucauldian discourse analysis and bibliographic research to study the main discourses and narratives related to the field of Library Science, and classification as a practice in the sense of Foucault. The aim of the study is to reveal the discursive discontinuities between different areas related to Library Science regarding the influence of classification on research and teaching.
