Abstract

Accountability is considered a critical aspect to successful governance processes, however, there are hardly any studies that have analyzed this element in the field of tourist destinations. This paper’s main purpose is to highlight the importance of accountability through the need shown by the citizens that the municipal public administration (MPA) is held accountable and the sustainability report usefulness in the tourist destinations. In order to achieve these objectives, we reviewed existing specialist literature and then proceeded with a survey of Spanish tourist destination stakeholders. The survey sample size was 11,251 individuals, with a final response rate of 1,027, representing a sampling error of ± 2.91% for a confidence level of 95%. The results of the investigation show how residents in tourist destinations have a crucial need for their MPAs to be accountable, especially on the economic front. These findings stand out, not only for their relevance in the field of tourism planning and management, but also for the important implications for public officials.
