Abstract

Hematopoietic cell transplantation is part of the treatment of malignant and non-malignant hematological diseases such as different types of acute leukemia and chronic lymphomas, medullary aplasias, among others. It is aggressive and of great toxicity to the organism that deals with damage in several organs and tissues, associated to a difficulty to administer effectively orally medicines to prevent or treat infections, and a graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). The most frequent secondary manifestations are mucositis, infections and hepatic vascular diseases. The aim of this work is to describe the oral manifestations of GVHD and, in particular, the alteration of the salivary glands that it causes. Hyposialia directly reflects the degree of glandular involvement as well as the severity of the clinical condition of the GVHD. It is necessary to find new therapeutic regimens to combat the weakening of the salivary glands as a result of this disease.
