Abstract
Th e article starts from Santayana’s early relationship with Sām.khya philosophy in 1894. This allows him to trace the influence of sām.khya on the philosophy of Santayana, focusing on both the similarities and the respective differences. The context is that of a Santayana away from the idea of progress, whose «happiness is to understand the ancients». A philosophy that tries to illuminate the daily process of living and that distances itself from the great idealist and reforming projects, positivism and the militant rejection of religion.
