Abstract

Domestic violence is nowadays an issue of social concern, and has become a national health problem in Spain. It is even said this kind of violence is in fashion and people wonder whether it is increasing. Gender violence has been a part of women’s daily life throughout history, but this violence used to be normalized, therefore hidden and silenced. Health professionals are aware of the educational and cultural changes regarding gender violence, paying attention to many issues subject to be explored. There are many researches regarding rough treatment but these cases are not studied from the women’s perspective. Our research proposal is a qualitative study to explore the perception of women suffering from gender violence regarding the role of health professionals in this issue. We will perform three focus groups with women who are victims of rough treatment and live in three different social institutions. Additionally, we will interview some of these women considered as key informants. We also aim to explore the contact process with the Health System, the counseling given by the health professionals, the professionals they are derived to, the kind of assistance they receive, how they value it all and whether they feel supported by the Health System or not.
