Abstract

The fifth centenary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci was commemorated all around the world throughout 2019. Da Vinci, a genius endowed with an impressive artistic talent, transcended the field of painting to permeate engineering, architecture, anatomy, palaeontology, botany, etc. In this article, a key aspect is analysed in the work of this Renaissance scientist that has gone unnoticed and that can be characterized as “Leonardo’s dream”, his lifelong illusion: the construction of mechanics as the fifth mathemata; the dream of the mathematization of the science of movement.
