The degree of trustworthiness of Vera Tassis’s editions of Calderón’s plays is one of the most controversial issues within the field of textual criticism of Golden Age theatre. A remarkable case is offered by El Tuzaní del Alpujarra, first printed in the Quinta parte of 1677, disowned by the author, and later edited by Vera Tassis under the title Amar después de la muerte in the Novena parte of 1691. Although the reliability of this latter text has been questioned, it has been chosen as the basis in the most recent critical editions of the play. A fuller consideration of the extant materials, however, provides evidence in support of the hypothesis that all of them ultimately derive from one faulty copy, and that Vera Tassis’s edition resorted to the Quinta parte of 1677 and another source, the text of which generally was more defective, though occasionally preserved superior readings
