Resumen

This contribution explains a modern updating of former and classical approaches of applied geomorphic mapping, also referred as physiographic, landscape or land-system approaches. Specifically, it describes the delineation and description of two levels of a landform hierarchical classification: Geomorphic Domains of the Extremadura Region of Spain, and Geomorphic Units of two areas of the same Autonomous Community (Alqueva Dam surroundings and International Tagus). In both cases, those studies were accomplished for the Consejería de Fomento, Vivienda, Ordenación del Territorio y Turismo de la Junta de Extremadura in the framework of the European Landscape Convention, ELC (Florence, October 20th, 2000), applicable in Spain from March 1st, 2008. Our work emphasizes and enlightens the importance of Geomorphology in the protection, management and planning of the landscape, which is the aim of the ELC.
