Abstract

A skeletal sample from the Punic period (V-II century B.C.) from Eivissa island has been analyzed in order to test if this population displays morphological affinities with the Punic populations from North Alrica, and especially, Irom the area 01 Cartago. Nine craniometric variables have been selected for the analysis, and ten samples Irom the western Mediterranean (nine Irom the Catalan-Balearic area and one Irom Tunis) have been included. A cluster analysis has been performed, using the UPGMA algorithm and the squared Euclidean distance, and also a principal component analysis (PCA). A notable morphological homogeneity has been observed between the western Mediterranean populations. It is concluded that, Irom a morphological pOint 01 view, is impossible to distinguish the Punic settlement 01 Eivissa Irom the contemporary and posterior Catalan-Balearic substrate.
