Zusammenfassung

The aim of this paper is to analyze the development of the studies on mining and metallurgy in the last thirty years. An historical aproach shows the overcoming of "modernizing" tendencies, who offer a simplistic list of these activities in Antiquity obtained mostly from written sources. The improvements in the understanding of such theme brought about by interdisciplinary and archaelogical data have been fundamental to further interpretation and have introduced new points of view to consider literary evidences. Three main questions are pointed out: the continuity or discontinuity of pre-Roman mining and metallurgy related to roman times, the diversity of juridical, financial and adminstrative organisation set up by intensive Roman exploitation of all kind of ores and the changes involved in the landscapes and the social structures. A short review of the four main areas of metal sources is made to finish.
