Abstract

Documents relating to investigations carried out between 1429-1430 on the situation of the Castilian Royal Treasury, which reflect the importance of the excise duties (or “official dues”) charged by high officials from the Royal Treasury Office: the Chancellor, Administrator, Inspectors of Accounts and Senior Scribes. At the same time, it reveals the very reduced importance then held by the former feudal property tax, the pecho, and by the old revenues or privileges previous to the “fiscal revolution” started by Alfonso X in 1265 and continued during the 14th century by Alfonso XI and Enrique III.
