Zusammenfassung

This article presents the UN Womens vision and commitments, its focus areas and the progress achieved to the date, it also provides an overview of the main gender equality challenges that the organization will have to face in the short term, including those recently mentioned for 2015 at the MDGs Summit. The five focus areas where UN Women will take the leadership will build on UNIFEMs work: to increase womens economical empowerment, including access to employment, goods and means of life; to end violence against women and girls, whether in conflict areas or not; to involve women in every aspect of the peace and security agenda; to ensure that gender equality is central to national development planning and budgeting, and to promote womens voice, participation and leadership in politics. Another major challenge is how to face the increasing inequalities resulting from globalization, within and between countries and regions. In the process of evaluating gender inequalities, UN Women has underlined the problem of services´ delivery and inequalities in access to public services for different groups of women and between men and women, which are ultimately hindering progress in particular in terms of health and education.
