¿Regreso a los valores materialistas? El dilema entre seguridad y libertad en los países desarrollados

Abstract

During the last 30 years Inglehart�s theory about the change in values has been based on the fact that the origin of that change �at least with respect to the axis that measures change from materialist values (related to scarcity and survival) to post-materialist values (related to self-expression and emancipation)� comes from the fact that developing societies provided an unprecedented personal and economic security to wider segments of their populations. This hypothesis has been confirmed by the evidence provided by societies with different levels of economic, social and political development and different cultural systems. Recently, however, some of the most developed societies are experiencing very important changes in those levels of personal and economic security. Thus, the increase in the feeling of personal and economic insecurity �due to factors such as terrorism, increase of activity from the organized and ordinary crime as well as the increase in temporary employment, unemployment, early retirement, «junk contracts» for young people, etc.- is currently experienced in developed and developing countries. Therefore one should expect changes in the values-orientation pointing to a decrease of post-materialist values and an increase of the materialist ones (law and order, social welfare). Data from the last surveys about values in the 1999-2000 and 2005-2007 waves suggest that in a significant number of societies that reversed change towards materialist values is already observed.
