Resumen

The modern health services, those which show, the impact of medical research and development, were consolidated in the more advanced notions throughout the nineteenth century and underwent a marked process of acceleration as from the Third decade of this century. Parallel to this development there was a change in the pattern of diseases and mortality which led to a longer and healthier life in the average man. On the other hand, the level of development (usually measured by the income per capita), and the economic system of any given country, determine the evolution of a hearth system which can also be influenced by purely ideological elements, reflections of a "pattern for a society worth having".
