Abstract
The ways in which Earth scientists carry out their work is described through 18 research cases. The first four are meant to show the specific analogical character of Earth Sciences, while the rest deal with the basic processes on which theories about the planet are based: how data are obtained (research cases 5 through 10), sample analytic techniques (research cases 11 through 13), and the display of results, usually including some type of map (research cases 14 through 18). Some suggestions on future lines of research about the Earth close the article.
