Abstract

Apoptosis is a form of cell death genetically controlled in which cells neatly commit suicide forming apoptotic bodies easily removed by phagocytic cells. Several mechanisms might activate apoptosis including soluble factors and cytokines, cell death receptors, DNA damage, hipoxia, stress factors, etc. The aim of this review is to described some general concepts of apoptosis and suggest its possible role in the destruction of the insertion teeth connective tissue associated to the periodontitis disease. Finally, this review propose the periodontal disease as an "in vivo" model to investigate the mechanism of action of apoptosis.
