Abstract
People do not tend to behave in a completely arbitrary fashion or simply motivated by feelings; they tend, rather, to develop strategies to maximize their interests, to satisfy their interests as much as possible given the resources they start out with. This application of economic analysis to social action is normally called the theory of decision or of rational choice. This article analyzes the scope and limits of incorporating it into an examination of collective action.
